Lawrence Free State 19, Olathe North 14

Two losses in a row from Olathe North was shocking, but three seems inexplicable.  Free State struck first in the second quarter when Kyle McFarland finished off a drive with a one-yard touchdown run after Shawn Knighton had taken a carry 97-yards to set up the score.  Later in the quarter, McFarland found Ryan Patterson on a 38-yard touchdown pass to make things 13-0, Free State at the half.  Orange Mooney added the next two scores of the game for Olathe North, scoring first on a four-yard run then on a 23-yard catch from Jordan Bruce, which gave the Eagles a 14-13 advantage.  Free State regained possession with 3:15 remaining in the fourth quarter and drove 80 yards, scoring on a seven-yard touchdown pass from McFarland to Patterson to win the game.

Olathe Northwest 21, Lawrence 3

Olathe Northwest's first momentum boost came on a seven-yard run from Avery Parker in the first quarter which put them up 7-0.  There second was when Lawrence quarterback Brad Strauss went down with an injury at the start of the second quarter--he did not return.  Lawrence's second-string quarterback had been injured during the week in practice, so receiver Drake Hofer was thrown into the quarterback position.  While he played well given the circumstances, it wasn't Strauss out there.  Lawrence managed one score on a field goal from Anthony Rosen, but they were shutout besides that.  Olathe Northwest's next two scores came on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Rook to Cody Sestrich and an 88-yard pass from Rook to Willie Cauley.

Olathe East 48, Blue Valley Northwest 27

It didn't matter what Blue Valley Northwest did, they weren't able to shut down Olathe East's dominant rushing attack.  The Hawks scored seven rushing touchdown in the game, en route to their 21-point statement victory over the Huskies.  Kendall Kelly scored four touchdowns on runs of three, two, three and nine yards.  John Kelsh added touchdowns on runs of 17 and 87 yards.  Austin Frazier completed the scoring trio of scoring with six-yard touchdown run.

SM South 35, Blue Valley North 18

SM South jumped to a comfortable 21-12 lead at halftime, and finished off the game with two second half touchdowns.  In the first half Gabe Guild scored on runs of 46 and 64 yards.  Alex Forslund added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Nick Oliver for the third touchdown.  SM South's two second half touchdowns came on a 25-yard run from Ra'Keim Abdul and an eight-yard run from Forslund.  With their victory the Raiders set up a win-or-go-home scenario with SM East to cap off the regular season.

SM Northwest 24, Leavenworth 22

This was a pretty evenly matched game after all.  SM Northwest scored twice in first half--once on a 41-yard field goal from Alex Allen and then again on a seven-yard run from Austin Vanderpool.  Leavenworth's first half score came on a 38-yard pass from Jason Randall to Judson Cole.  In the second half SM Northwest scored twice, first on a four-yard run from Vanderpool, and later on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Colton Dirks to Jake Horner.  Cole added a 32-yard touchdown run, and Randall scored on a 14-yarder late in the fourth quarter.

Olathe South 46, Blue Valley West 29

This game was hardly a defensive struggle, but Olathe South managed to win by more than 13 points, keeping their playoff hopes alive.  Olathe South's first half scores came on a 69-yard punt return by Matt Elliott, an eight-yard run from Teddy Colbert and a one-yard run from Frankie Seurer.  They led 21-13 at the half.  In the second half the Falcons added four touchdowns on a 14-yard run from Colbert, an 89-yard pass from Seurer to Drew Johnson, and runs of six and 13 yards from Jordan Ward.

SM West 30, SM East 25

A big second quarter combined with a turnover-ridden SM East club turned out to be enough from SM West to win a district championship, and regain the Nut Cup.  After surrendering a safety early on, SM West scored on a 31-yard field goal from Mark Whitrock, a 75-yard touchdown pass from Armani Williams to Ben Lake and a 20-yard touchdown run from Brett Sterbach.  The Vikings led 17-2 at the half.

SM East had a big third quarter, scoring touchdowns on a run from Jeff Cole and a 53-yard pass from Dakota Collins to Connor Rellihan.  SM West's lone third quarter score came on a 37-yard Whitrock field goal.  The Vikings led 20-17 heading into the final quarter of play.  SM East started things off with another safety, before SM West's Whitrock added his third field goal of the day from 37 yards out.  On SM East's next possession Robert Rice picked off a Collins pass and took it 63-yards for a touchdown.  The two scrores gave SM West a 30-17 lead.  SM East 's final stab came on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Rellihan.

SM North 69, Wyandotte 6

SM North's 69 points were the most scored in a single game from a Sunflower League team all season.  The player of the game, without a doubt was SM North's Mason Perez.  He scored the first five touchdowns of the game on receptions of 25, 25, 34 and 29 yards, then a 28-yard punt return.  With the win, the Indians boosted their record to 2-6, and with a win on Friday over Leavenworth they'll qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Mason Perez at SMN is the most talented player in the Sunflower League. His skills on offense, defense, and special teams are incredibly special.

Shawnee Mission North? With 2-6? LOL! Not so "talented" player to us.

Perez is a very talented player on a struggling team. After seeing every game, and other players he is easily a top 5 player in the League. Just on a bad team.

Not even close in Top 5 player at all....

He was the only player to score against ON on his team and has made most of the scores throughout the whole season.

VikingMom said...

scoring against ON isnt seeming like THAT big of a feat, he is a good player indeed but is highlighted especially because SMN has nobody else as a threat

with Straus's career in the dumps i really do think that i should be the spotlight player against SME this friday

Forslund maybe you should actually show up to practice. Youre so cocky i get all the yards here you should just do your job and stop being a ginge

Eli, one minor point of correction. SMW led 30-19 after the pick 6 not 30-17, SME had already gotten their second safety. How many turnovers did East have? I thought I counted 8 at the game (6 picks by Collins, a fumble into West's endzone and the muffed pooch kickoff after Whitrock's last FG) but someone on here posted 7. Do you have the actual number?

Mason Perez is a talented player, but i dont think he is the best in the sunflower league. No one else on his team is a huge threat besides him, he is the team.

Plus they played Wyandotte?? 5 TD's against Wyandotte is not that impressive, he would be the best in the league if he scored 5 against ON

Perez is great athlete..2-6 doesnt have anything to do with Perez's ability..according to the blog post he's 3rd on receiving td's list so yes he's a baller. Wyandotte or not how many other receivers have 4 receptions for td's in one game. I'm sure Gentry and Cauley played against some bad team too this season.

In the last two weeks he has scored 7 td's(notice small td's)against SMNW and Wyndotte. Maybe the worst 2 teams they will face all year, since they can't play themselves. Perez is a good player on a real bad team. If he played on ONW (Cauley, Middleton, Rook), ON (Gentry, Mooney, Root, Bruce)OS, SM WEST, LFS. He would be 3rd or 4th offense option. The true great players change games and end up changing there teams fortunes. He has done neither for SMN in 2 years. Beat Leavenworth then play beat some better teams and move on in the playoffs, then we can talk about the Greatness of this player. Until then enjoy the nice player that you have and watch the post season from home.

sorry mr please Perez has scored a td every week except one. whether it was a receving td or special teams td. im not a Perez fan or a smn fan. im just acknowledging he's a great athlete and top receiver not the best player in sunflower league. your team record doesn't have anything to do with the individuals greatness.

Child please said...

Redzone we know you are a SMN fan in your name alone. Name the greats that didn't win. And I'm not talking about winnig a championship. but just win games. Greatness isn't just stats, it is willing your team to victories. Though i'm sure Mason is a fine player and all around great kid, but again win games not just score td's and lose every week. Make an interception when the game is on the line. make that first down catch when you need to run out the clock. Greatness isn't given out, it is earned. Sorry he has not earned that mark yet!!!

no mr please once again im not a smn fan, i didn't go to school in johnson county or the kc area...i just recognizing a good athelete (perez). i beleive last year the blog post said perez was the top d-back in the sunflower league as a junior, had the most picks...so he's made plays as a d-back, special teams and receiver. i said he was a great athelet NOT the greatest... if im a college coach i see he had 11 rec td's (3rd most rec)i don't care what his teams record is...perez, cauley and whomever is lined up across from a d-back not a whole team...the receiver has to go out and make the play and he's done that...quit being a hater...check it out first...then talk..i can't stand smn (jm1771 is the fan)....if i was going to talk up any team it be oe...

In the long run, SMW kids will end up working for SME kids, and one football game will not change that. But in the meantime, SMW still has Hollister, hair gel, crappy academics, cargo shorts, an ugly student body, and their ghetto neighborhoods to look forward to. So, VikingDad, why don't you go back to cheering on your band kid (who is probably ugly or fat), and the Imapler can just think of a name that infers he has a Mandingo sized penis, when it is probably too small to please the 11 year old girls that he preys on.

LOL. Good job Footballrulz

By the way, I am a football parent and have been for 7 years, two boys. But I wouldnt be embarassed to be a band parent. West band has nearly 100 members. Looked like the SME band had about 20. But I'm sure they work hard too.

I hope Eli does something about FootballRulez, that is just crossing the line. (By like a mile)

TheImpaler said...

Hehe, yeah, I'm always amazed at the size of the East band...they have to use the dance team and the cheerleaders just to make an 'E' on the field whereas the West band spells out "VIKINGS" in their pregame.

FootballRulez, You forgot to mention SME's famous cocktail parties.
