The Olathe School Board unanimously approved the hire on Thursday night, effectively ushering in a new era for the Olathe East football program.
The second-year head coach will replace Jeff Meyers, who had been the head coach of Olathe East since the school opened its doors in 1992.
Owen had been the head coach at Class 4A Eudora for just one season, leading the team to a 5-4 record in 2014.
Prior to that, Owen spent 13 years as an assistant coach at Olathe North, after joining the staff in 2003. He was a coach on two state title teams with the Eagles.
Perhaps Owen's greatest claim to fame with Olathe North came as a member of the program's vaunted 1996 6A state championship team, which was the first title team in program history.
The senior linebacker, and one of the team's undisputed leaders, helped lead Olathe North to a 12-0 record that year, helping to defeat Wichita Northwest in the state title game. His infamous 68-yard punt return for a touchdown in the game came be seen the 10:00-minute mark of this Youtube video.
With the hiring of Owen, three of the five Sunflower League head coaching vacancies have been filled. Ben Bartlett had the interim tag removed at SM North, and Bo Black was hired on at SM Northwest.
Openings remain at Olathe North and SM South.

Really disappointed to not have him back at ON because the man is such a great coach that can help any team be the best it can be!
Looking forward to the ON vs OE matchup. These two coaches are very competitive and know each other well. They will bring it.
