Playoff News and Notes

With wins this past Friday, Lawrence Free State will meet Blue Valley in the 6A East Sub-State game next Friday for a trip to the state championship game the following Saturday in Topeka.

I find it interesting that Lawrence Free State was able to put together the game they did to defeat Olathe North in the sectional contest. Olathe North had previously defeated the Firebirds 35-7 in early October. The fact that Lawrence Free State came away on top really shows how much they did improve over the season.

Their one-two combo of running back Chucky Hunter and quarterback Camren Torneden has clearly reached a dominance. I think both those players are amongst the fastest and shifiest in the all of Kansas, and it is very difficult to defend their option attack.

Surprisingly enough, however, the Firebirds victory against Olathe North was more defensively geared. With a final score of 10-6, there wasn't a whole lot of ball movement going on. Olathe North was favored by more than 10 points, but wasn't able to get anything going offensively and suffered a loss.

On the other side Blue Valley Northwest's run finally ended at the hands of Blue Valley Tigers, but the game was anything but easy victory.

The game started pretty easy for Blue Valley, as they jumped to a comfortable 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Blue Valley Northwest responded in the second quarter with two touchdowns of their own bringing the score to a 14 all tie at the half.

In the fourth quarter Blue Valley booted a field goal for a 17-14 advantage. Blue Valley Northwest drove and scored a touchdown, but missed the extra point, gaining the lead 20-17. Blue Valley then drove late in the contest and scored a touchdown on a late touchdown pass to win the game 24-20.

What??? No mention of the last - VERY - controversial play in which Rampy's son makes the receptioj - or was it - fumbled on the one yard line into the end zone and a BV Tiger grabs the ball at the back of the end zone. Problem with the spectacular recovery play was that the Sophmore player's legs were hanging out of bounds and therefore he was out of play. video to back it up. Zebras blow the call and Tigers get away with a cheap one! Come on Eli - tell the whole story!!!
