Sunflower League Extra: Week Three

Brad Strauss. Lawrence Journal World.
Top 5 Player Ratings

1. Brad Strauss, QB, Lawrence
Week Two Stats: 11-of-15 passing, 169 yards, 2 TDs; 10 carries, 89 yards, 1 TD; 1 defensive interception

Strauss returned to his normal form in week two, combining for 258 yards of total offense and adding three touchdowns.  Hidden in those stats is that he completed 73% of his passes and averaged 8.9 yards per carry.  When he's that efficient LHS is tough to beat.

2. Kyle McFarland, Quarterback, Lawrence Free State
Week Two Stats: 9-of-21 passing, 161 yards, 1 TD; 19 carries, 133 yards; 2 defensive interceptions

McFarland is giving Strauss a run for his money as the top rated player in the league.  His week two stats are probably more impressive than Strauss' when you consider he put them up against SM West, a team believed to be one of the better defensive units in the league.  A big game (and victory) against Olathe South would almost certainly jump him to the top of the ratings.

3. Gabe Guild, Running Back, SM South
Week Two Stats: 35 carries, 204 yards, 1 TD

SM South's workhorse back did what he does best last Friday, toting the rock again and again and making the opposition pay.  He leads the Sunflower League in rushing by 77 yards and that margin could grow in the next two weeks when SM South takes on SM North and SM Northwest.

4. Connor Rellihan, Wide Receiver, SM East
Week Two Stats: 11 receptions, 177 yards, 2 TDs; 1-of-1 passing, 25 yards; 1 defensive interception

Last Thursday against Olathe North Rellihan was the top performer on the field.  He's a combo athlete that does everything from catching passes to running the football to playing cornerback.  He also has a great set of wheels and may be among the league's fastest players in pads.

5. Hayden Frazier, Running Back, Olathe East
Week Two Stats: 33 caries, 257 yards, 4 TDs

Will this be just the proverbial cup of coffee on the Top 5 Player Ratings for Frazier?  I would say no, but it remains to be seen.  As Olathe East's primary running back (as opposed to the alternating backs system they've had in the past) he's going to the majority of the carries and in Olathe East's offense that means a ton of yards.

Honorable Mention: Jordan Darling, SM East; Jason Randall, Leavenworth; Tyrone Jenkins, Lawrence; Brett Sterbach, SM West; Russell White, Olathe South; Remington Whitley, Olathe South; Braden Smith, Olathe South.

Great job Eli, the site has grown over the past 2 years and is now my source for all sunflower league information. Thank you

Thanks for the positive feedback. It really is encouraging to see how many more readers there are today than there were four years ago when I began coverage (which solely focused on SM West in the early months).

I hope it's as entertaining to all readers as it is for me, the author.

Yes, Eli, I appreciate all the hard work you must put in on this site. Thank you. Have you ever though about expanding it to basketball as well?

Somebody put the Stat check on Olathe South. How many tackle leaders can you have on one team. REALLY!!!! Give me a break. We will make a new stat unassisted, assisted, and breathed upon.

By the way Eli great job on the site as well. Its nice to have somewhere to get stats and info. You make the conference more credible.

I went to maxpreps and looked at the statcast which is available for both loathe south games. Os had 43 tackles vs olathe east and 61 vs shawnee mission north. This includes punts and kickoffs. Total tackles from this source is 104 if they were all solo. When I look at the misstate sports week2 sunflower league pdf, 7 olathe south players listed in top 10 with a combined 97 solo tackles and 95 assists. If indeed the solo tackles are correct - not likely - that leaves 104-95=9 x 2 potential assists and this assumes no one else on defense (including Braden Smith) gets any tackles. You have to assume the solo tackles were way overreported to midstate sports. Numbers don't add up

Oh, btw, you can back into the midstate sports pdf by going to maxpreps for a sunflower league team and then go to prior year and click on stats

Oops, mis typed. Everywhere it says maxpreps in the above 2 posts, it should say prepskc

Seriously Eli! Great work, you're all over it this year. I live in Durango, Co and only check this site for info. The Star likes to focus on MO FB (mainly Rock and the BS's) it's unfortunate that they pay reporters to cover KS HS FB and continue to do such a poor job. I tweeted at you last Friday inquiring if any other schools stream games like SME does, I'd like to be more knowledgable of the other schools. Plus I went to see Durango High play last Friday and it was not a good product. They're 4A here in CO and both teams were very bad. DHS only has 8 seniors and starts a lot of sophs but it just wasn't good football...

Eli, I need to quit looking at tackles since it just keeps bringing up questions that are outside your control, but, I noticed on Mid-State Sports there is a Josh Ammel from Leavenworth with 30 tackles listed in the "Top 50" KC area document. However, he doesn't show up in the Mid-State sports week 2 Sunflower League player document for tackles. Just another curiousity.

Brett sterbach and juanyae stallings both possibly out for SMW this week...

Eli...you should literally tell Metro Sports to look at your site and that you can do about 74 X better than them at covering football haha.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliments. As far as the tackles go the problem has been figured out (there was an input error along the way in which one Olathe South game was counted twice) and from now on the stats should be completely accurate. They'll be corrected starting with next week's numbers (in all honesty, they're not very far off this week).
