Caught OE too hot... But seriously? 5-4 HOSTING a 7-2 team? Get your stuff straight KSHAA! Reward the team for the better season with a HOME GAME! That's my beef probably because we always lose at Olathe. This year sucks because its just not right. Great win though OE... Still calling for Myers head?

TheImpaler said...

As much as I hate SM teams losing and O East winning, the upshot of this for the Vikes in now a putative SMW-LFS substate game moves to SMS stadium.

Intersting games in round 2:

SMW @ LAW
OE @ LFS
Derby @ Dodge
Hutch @ Topeka

Free State won 38-22

Traevohn Wrench is a beast. Way to hang on LHS. Bring on the Vikings!

So IF SMW wins they host sub state regardless of opponnet?

Copied from the KSHAA football handbook regarding hosting playoff games:

3 . D Selection of Host Sites for Play-off Games
1. The district chairpersons of the districts which will compete against each other in the first round of post-season play will communicate with each other on Friday evening after the final district contests.
2. In all 11-Man football classes the host school for the first round of play-off games will be the district winners. In 11-Man classes the visiting school for the first round of play-off games will be the district runner-up.
3. In 8-Man, district winners will serve as first round host and the visiting school for the first round of play-off games will be a district runner-up.
4. In all classes other than 6A and 5A, in all subsequent rounds after the first round the host will be the school hosting the least number of post-season contests this year. If both teams have hosted an equal number of post-season games (this season), then the East-West formula will be used to determine the site (See section 3.E.1).
5. In Class 6A and 5A, in all rounds after the first round, if seeded teams (1-4) advance to play each other, the higher seeded team will host is if they both have hosted an equal number of post-season games (this season). If seeded teams (1-4) have hosted a different number of post-season games (this season), the team which has hosted the fewer number of games will be the host school. If non-seeded teams advance, if they have hosted an equal number of post-season games, then the East-West formula will be used to determine host. If a non-seeded team plays a seeded team and they have hosted an equal number of post-season games (this season), then the host team will be the seeded teams.
6. The district chairpersons, along with the participating schools, will determine whether the host school’s facilities are adequate or whether a nearby facility will be utilized.
7. In Class 6A and 5A, if the same game facility is to be used by two or more different playoff host schools on the same date, the host school on the predetermined date and time will be determined on the basis of seed (higher seed hosting on pre-determined date). In all other classes, if the same game facility is to be used by two or more different playoff host schools on the same date, the host school on the predetermined date and time will be determined by lot. The other teams involved in the play-off game(s) at that site will determine a day and time mutually agreed upon. Should the schools not agree upon a day and/or time the KSHSAA staff will set the day and time of the play-off(s). NOTE: If current exiting language does not resolve the priority in who would host on the pre-deteremind date, the host choice is determined by lot.

Lawrence hosts SMW and with a win will also host Free State in the finals. Pretty nice reward for going on the road and beating a very tough Gardner Edgerton squad, and yes Seth, Wrench is the truth. Hard to say when a guy goes for 300+ (on 50 carries, FIFTY) but the Lawrence D was actually effective in controling him holding him to a little over 6 yards per carry instead of the near 10 he was averaging.

theRev_Carnahan said...

@Bob Bobb, yes because if Free State wins, West would host because they play 1 home game versus Free States 2. If East wins they will host becasue they are the higher seed, each hosting 1 playoff game to date.

So, the first 6 games really don't mean that much after all. Both 2 seeds go on the road next week? Happy for LAW to be able to have a home game, but it still doesn't make a case for playing well all year to earn a 2 seed if you win your first game and have to go on the road - proof that the seed system is flawed. If you can earn a seed, it should be worth something. In this system, it really doesn't mean anything.

Way to go, 'Birds! Second half was really boring. Both teams knew the game was over half way through the second quarter and pretty much ran out the clock the second half. Score was no indication of the dominance FS had in this one. Two late scores against the 2/3 stringers. FS is hot and playing well. Work hard this week, guys, and take the field Friday ready to roll!

TheImpaler said...

The winner of SMW-LAW (obviously SMW) will host the substate game regardless of the outcome of the other game.

This is What the KSHAA football handbook should read Regarding hosting playoff games:

3.D Selection of Host Sites for Play-Off Games
1. The team that was seeded higher in the play-off bracket will host the play-off game.

TheImpaler said...

Sorry OE would host LAW...keep having a hard time thinking of the Hawks as a seed.. SMW will host either opponent when (if?) they win.

Vikings were awesome Friday night, other than the penalties. Must have had 100+ yards in penalties, would have easily scored 50 on BVNW if they hadn't kept shooting themselves in the foot. Defeensive starters held Huskies scoreless through 3 quarters. Lawrence O not much different. DL was able to contain Cota without secondary help and LAW doesn't have a back as good as Cota. Completely shut down Husky passing game.

On offense, West is a d coordinator's nightmare now. Sterbach with his usual 150 yards. Then Sterb running the wildcate...then Maloney taking the snap in the wildcat running the read option with Sterbach. Unstoppable. And then you've got Verdini in the pocket, on the rollout hitting Maloney and Lake deep or Spills over the middle plus Sterbach coming out of the backfield catching passes. And then, if that's not enough you've got a bruiser fullback in Steffon Ward ripping off 7 or 8 up the middle any time he wants and catching passes out in the flat. Hell, Sterbach's backup, Tory Powell had a 30 yard reverse field TD run after Sterb's day was over.

Vikes have a much better defense, a hugely better kicking game and at least as good (and much more diverse) an offense as Lawrence. I fell extremely confident about this game. Lions damn lukcy to escape a mediocre 'Blazer team by about 4 yards on a weak field goal attempt at then end of the game.

I always thought Free State fans were the most annoying folks. I was wrong this guy from SMW is.

The beauty of this whole thing TheImpaler? They play Friday night! The better team will move on.

TheImpaler said...

No doubt rev, we can babble til we turn blue on this blug but the kids will decide it Friday night. I guess I'll have to drive up to Lawrence along with the rest of the Viking nation. The BVNW game was a thing of beaurty though...I think anyone who was there would agree.

Govannon Grey said...

OK, fellow Sunflower League Fans, I'm in a conundrum here. I live in Lawrence, no allegiance to either team and I don't know which game I should go watch. The LAW/SMW hurricane game rematch, or the suddenly hot OE team vs LFS, the best team in east Kansasas, whose only loss was to a team with a similar offensive philosophy in OS?

Adam Sullivan said...

Govannon, I also live in Lawrence and have no ties to LFS/LAW. I think SMW/LAW will be one heck of a football game. Strauss having a rematch against the Vikings D will be a great watch. I think LFS wont have too much of a problem with Olathe East this week. Meyers is a great coach and will have them ready, but Free State is playing at another level right now.

I like Govannon's method for choosing the home team in the playoffs.

Don't be hating, VS....Seth is naturally scared...expecially when you consider the BVNW BEAT G/E this year.

We'll let the boys settle it on the field....your posts are laughable

Govannon Grey said...

Ok, as an EKL fan as well as the Sunflower I have to point out that Traevon Wrench had turf toe at that point in the season (vs. BVNW) and was running at like 60%.

Seth Nation said...

Wrench is the best back we have faced this year bar none....he will be playing D-1 in his future. He is definitely the real deal, and did not hardly play at all the first 2 or 3 games....Which makes the comment about BVNW pretty much a stupid comment

Free State Fan said...

We have OTA's in the summer to work on being annoying - it takes practice. When I got here 13 years ago, people were too nice. We now offer belly dancing lessons for beer-belly dads, screaming lessons for moms that just come to the games to visit with friends, and for the students we instituted verbal jousting and mandatory demon debating classes in the fall to prepare them for athletic contests for the year.

Seriously... EVERY fan base has a handful of annoying people that make fools of themselves, go to far and do not honor the sportsmanship code. And EVERY fan base has the vast majority of fans that respect their teams and opponents.

Seth what's your analysis of the game? SMW will be able to run. SMW has played the spread pretty well 3&1 against it. And west has a kicker! LHS has home field and the best skilled player Strauss. Looks like slight edge to the visitor.

Bird Hunter said...

The BVNW beat GE comment shows some real ignorance!

Seth Nation said...

Here is my take on the game. First throw the first game out the window the condition was ripe for turnovers of which both teams had many which caused all the chaos in the last 5 minutes.

With that said I look for Sterbach to get his usual 150 yds of rushing. To me the key for SMW is what can the rest of the offense do. How many yds passing will they get and what can they do with it.

For Lawrence I think between Strauss, Jenkins, and Brown they will get somewhere around 120 yds rushing between the three of them. Passing is where they excel at. With 3 of the top recievers in the sunflower league I think this is what gives them the edge. Strauss will get his yards, and 3-4 touchdowns.

Both teams have changed dramatically since the the Hurricane game. SMW has gotten better on offense, LHS has gotten better on defense. These are really two evenly matched teams.

Our achilles heel is the lack of a kicking game, had we just kicked PAT's we would have had 4-5 more points against GE making that last feel goal a mute point. SMW's achilles heel is a dependence on Sterbach. If your #1 player is an RB there is only so much he can do to influence a game.

One thing I think we can take away from the Hurricane Game is the line play. I think both are evenly matched on both sides of the ball.

I give the defensive edge to SMW and the offensive edge to LHS. In the end I think the passing attack of LHS will be the edge. LHS can kick PAT's they just most often choose not to for whatever reason.

I'm looking for a great game and I'm thinking it will be a 32-24 victory for LHS.

Would welcome all thoughts

As for FREE STATE FAN, it's all part of the rivalry, I came into this season thinking LFS was over rated, mainly because the last time I had seen them play was when we shut them out the year before. I know a ton of kids and parents on that team from my time coaching when they were younger and just did not buy into the hype they were giving all year. All I can say now is you have a damn good team led by a damn good defense. I and truly truly cannot imagine the hype if we play in two weeks....I'm pulling for you guys over OE

What Do I Know? said...

Although as Eli will tell you that Maloney is just as explosive as sterbach

Eli Underwood said...

Judging by the way both teams (LHS and SMW) have been playing I wouldn't be surprised to see the game go down to the wire.

Honestly I don't see an upper hand. LHS has a great passing attack, but SMW has a solid secondary and is great at rushing the passer.

SMW runs the ball extremely well, but LHS has the quick strike ability to negate SMW running down the clock.

The kicking game could factor in. You never know. But it hasn't for LHS through 10 weeks of play and LHS converts about 50% of their two-point conversions.

A slight edge for both teams:

*LHS is playing at home, and they lost earlier in the season to SMW. Everyone knows the old adage about how hard it is to beat a good team twice--especially when that team (LHS) is playing at home, again.

*SMW didn't expend much energy taking care of BVNW. As opposed to LHS whose game literally went down to the last snap. The LHS defenders are undoubtedly beat up having been battered by Wrench 50 times. Can LHS hold up against a battering rushing attack two weeks in a row? We shall see.

My feeling is the SMW/LAW game will all come down to whether SMW can stop LAW more than 3 times. SMW will be able to move the ball and score against the LAW D. LAW wins because their offense is so efficient and it takes the other team out of their game plan. Should be an interesting game. LAW dodged a bullet last week, but, when is the last time Strauss turned the ball over 3 times? I think SMW secondary may get a few picks but it should be a great game.

I like to see that Lawrence (fs AND lhs) is finally back in the game after the split 17 years or so ago...they have had some good teams since obviously but it seems like it has taken too long...seems like the O north split didn't effect them as much, if at all, but doesn't Olathe have open enrollment? Anyways, i'm glad to see O north out of it finally, hate to see that Weir is back tho, he could take a team full of no talent ass clowns to state...guess i just contradicted myself, but you get my point...

The LAW/SMW game will be one hell of a game...last week was too close for LAW in my opinion but GE's back is impressive, AND he's only a junior, that sucks...Strauss is arguably the best player in the league but has shown he can stumble under pressure the last few games...if a couple things went different in the FS game the outcome might have been different...same with the GE game, it could have possibly/easily been a two score game without the fumbles...

it is hard to beat a team twice, that's for sure, i unfortunately know from experience...LAW also has home field advantage...LAW also has a terrible kicking game, but when have they ever been good at kicking? I won't be surprised either way the outcome, but i'm pulling for LAW...I also hope FS wins over O East, a LAW/FS rematch would be awesome

Free State Fan said...

I'm already on record as loving a LAW/LFS semi-final to guarantee a Lawrence team in the state championship. My attention, of course, is on OE and hoping we can beat them. We can't play next week if we don't win Friday. Go 'Birds!

OE should not be underestimated. I think they have proven as of last week that they aren't a team that anyone can just roll over.

Wii Not Fit said...

Yes, but Free State has proven over the season that they are probably the most dominant team on the east side of the state. I'm predicting Free State fairly handily and Lawrence in a shoot out that will be close.
