Sunflower League Extra: Part VI

SM East's Kyle Ball has a season stat line
that reads 58 tackles (19 for loss), and six
sacks. Photo LJWorld.
Week Six Players of the Week

Kyle Ball, SM East: The league's most ferocious defender had perhaps the best game of his career on Friday night. From his defensive end position, Ball recorded 16 tackles (nine for loss), two sacks and and a deflected pass. In many respects he plays like the JJ Watt of Kansas high school football. He's just a relentless pass rusher, who has exceptional speed and quickness all over the field. If he wasn't such a tweener (he's listed at 6-2, 235) he would probably have a collection of FBS offers. You can watch Ball's highlights from the game on his Hudl page linked here.

Jonathon Sands, Olathe South: Sands had the type of game every defensive back dreams of, recording three interceptions, including a game-clinching pick in his team's own endzone with 18 seconds left in the game. Sands is now tied for the league lead in interceptions with five. Tallying three interceptions is like a golfer knocking in a hole-in-one -- we just don't see it very often. The last time a player recorded three picks in a game was when Olathe East's Junior Williams snagged three in a Regional playoff game against Olathe Northwest in November of 2011. The modern record? Olathe East's Anthony Parks intercepted four against SM North in 2002.

Week Six Coaches of the Week

Gene Wier, Olathe North / Dustin Delaney, SM East: The head coaches of the league's co-champions share the top honors this week. And here's why -- both of these teams entered the season with targets on their backs. We still have a long ways to go, but through six weeks each coach has their team sitting at 6-0, which is all you can ask for at this point. Olathe North has had a much more difficult schedule, and Wier's been like a wizard navigating his team through every game. SM East hasn't played the schedule of Olathe North, but let's not overlook the way SM East has blown out every team they've played. It says something when you can get your team fired up for even the easy opponents.

Will Schneider, SMN, is worthy of a huge SO. To be 500 yards ahead of the pack and average 200+/2 for an 0-6 team is remarkable regardless of the game circumstances. I could be wrong, but I believe he is just a sophomore on top of that? BIG PROPS TO HIM!

Absolutely FSF! His overall record my be ugly, but the work he has done on the field has won me over in the two games I have seen him play in... Reality for the rest of the SFL, this young SO even with 3 games+ left in 2014 still has a combined 18+ games still to play before he graduates in the Spring of 17!

Schneider is, without a doubt, the best hs qb I have seen in my 15+ years of college scouting/coaching.

Once again, Weir or whom ever can get ON offensive stats out there! Why is it such a problem to get the D-line stats out!?! Weir should be proud of what his D-line is doing for him and ON!!! I bet the boys on the D-line would get their name in an article and would be compared to JJ Watt too! Weir has a lot of seniors that are trying to go too college they need to be looked at and valued. D-line WINS games and coaches our to support all players on the team. I challenge Coach Weir to put D-line stats out!!!!! So whatcha gonna do Coach Weir!?

SM East should be doing good with an easy schedule! My question is, how are the 6A schedules determined before the season?
