Sunflower League Week Five Game Recaps

Lawrence 19, SM South 7

SM South started this game as well as any game all season, scoring on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Zach McQueen to Joe Fales less than two minutes into the game. But Lawrence's defense went into lockdown mode and shut down the Raiders completely from there on. Later in the quarter LHS answered on a 30-yard bootleg quarterback keep from Alan Clothier to tie the game at 7. Early in the second quarter, JD Woods scored a touchdown on a four-yard run to put LHS up 13-7. Woods would add another touchdown run of nine yards later in the quarter to give the Chesty Lion a 19-7 advantage at the half. The score would hold through the second half, as LHS pushed their record to 3-2, while SM South dropped to 1-4.

Olathe Northwest 37, SM North 20

Devin Antcil scored the only points of the first quarter on a field goal which put Olathe Northwest up 3-0. SM North answered promptly in the second quarter, when Will Schneider closed out a drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Indians up 7-3. Schneider added another rushing touchdown, just before the half, to give SM North a 13-3 lead. Olathe Northwest answered with a late touchdown pass from Jack Hatzfeld to pull to within four points, at 13-9, which was the score at halftime. The Ravens would go on to control the second half. Hatzfeld added an early rushing touchdown to put Olathe Northwest up 16-13. Next, Adam Harter added a touchdown run to push the lead to 23-13. SM North would answer that call, when Schneider found Nick Perez on a 36-yard touchdown pass to making things 23-20 late in the third quarter. But in the fourth quarter, Olathe Northwest added two rushing touchdowns from Dominique Bruce to go up 37-20, and win the game.

SM East 42, Lawrence Free State 14

No team seems to be able to bury their opponents early like SM East. The Lancers broke opening scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run from Wyatt Edmisten with 9:19 left in the first quarter. Free State did answer, putting together a nice drive and scoring on a 14-yard touchdown run from Bryce Torneden to tie the game at 7. But SM East came right back when Gunnar Englund found Alec Dean on a 45-yard touchdown pass to get the lead back at 14-7. Edmisten would add a one-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to give the Lancers a 21-7 halftime lead. SM East piled on two early third quarter touchdowns -- an eight-yard run from Jackson Gossick and a six-yarder from Calvin Jones -- to go ahead 35-7 with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter. Free State would add their second touchdown of the game shortly thereafter on a one-yard run from Torneden to make things 35-14. In the fourth quarter SM East added their final score on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Englund to Mike Bamford.

Olathe North 38, Leavenworth 22

This was another solid victory for Olathe North, putting them at 5-0, and one victory away from claiming at least a share of the Sunflower League crown. An early Landry Hodges touchdown run of one yard gave Leavenworth an early 7-0 lead. Olathe North answered with two first quarter touchdowns -- the first on a 28-yard run from Cole Murphy and the second when Venus Triplett returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown. The score gave the Eagles a 12-7 lead. Next, Olathe North added an 11-yard touchdown pass from Murphy to Jeighlon Cornell to make the halftime score 19-7. Leavenworth scored the only touchdown of the second half when Isaiah Ross took a carry in from six yards out, and a successful two-point conversion made things 19-15. Olathe North then put things away with three consecutive touchdowns. The first came on a six-yard run from Vinnie Shabbazz, the second on a one-yard run from Murphy, and the third on a 23-yard run from Matt Wright. Wright's score made the game 38-15. Leavenworth added a final score on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Hodges to Ross.

Olathe South 31, SM West 21

Olathe South's early touchdowns gave the Falcons a comfortable lead which they carried through for the victory. Just five minutes into the game Olathe South led 14-0, with the touchdowns coming on a three-yard run from DaeVonte' Nance and a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jake Seurer to Johnny Sands. The Falcons added a third touchdown on a one-yard touchdown run from Brady Noernberg to go up 21-0 midway through the third quarter. SM West answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Adam Rellihan to Dante' Lindsey to make things 21-7. Olathe South then came back with a nine-yard touchdown run from Nance to go up 28-7 at halftime. SM West scored two touchdowns in the third quarter on a one-yard run from Rellihan and a four-yard run from Tarik Watson to pull to within seven, at 28-21 entering the fourth quarter. Olathe South was able to hold the lead, and add a 40-yard field goal from Logan Swartz, to close out the game with a 10-point victory.

SM Northwest 27, Olathe East 7

There have been more important victories in the Linn Hibbs era, but there haven't been any more impressive than this. Sam Sullivan was the star of the first half for the Cougars, adding touchdowns on runs of nine and 53 yards, to give SM Northwest a 14-0 halftime edge. The Cougars made the lead 21-0 early in the third quarter on a 79-yard touchdown run from Duron Lowe. Olathe East finally got on the board in the third quarter with a 57-yard touchdown pass from Chase Miller to Zach Cahill to make things 21-7. SM Northwest added a 74-yard touchdown run from Lowe later in the quarter to extend the lead to 27-7, which proved to be the final score.
