Congratulations to SM West who claimed their first state championship since 1985, and third in school history. Stay tuned for a game recap tomorrow morning.
Great job Vikes, Probably couldn't have played worse in the first half and the officiating was ridiculous but you perservered and fought through the adversity and simply just wanted it more than Hutch in the end. Standing in the ticket line before the game I heard some Salthawk fan on seeing the 'Rematch' shirts say "What rematch? Have we played these guys before? We've won so many of these I can't remember"...I bet they remember us now...see you again next year SaltHawks...
Great win. Really clamped down on D in the second half, using Andre in the wildcat just gave us enough to finish our drives! Watch out next year, Verdini and Maloney will be back!
*SM West's defense limited Hutch's offense to 50 yards on 20 second half plays.
*Brett Sterbach finished with 273 rushing yards and a touchdown on 34 carries. That put him at 2,229 rushing yards for the season. Simply put, your back rushes for 2,000+ and you've got a pretty good shot at a state title. Sunflower League teams have won state in 5 of the 6 times a player has cracked 2,000.
*SM West picked off two of Hutch's three passes, then loaded 10 into the box throughout the second half, effectively shutting off Hutch's big play potential.
Mark my words it will be Free State and SMW in sub state again next year. Both are returning tons of talent and frankly I think those two and Olathe North will seperate themselves next year and will dominate the sunflower league next season. Props to SMW on a great year. If it isn't too soon for a bold prediction on next year, I think Free State's Joe Dineen will take home the Simone award and I think Free State will be taking the trip to Topeka. It was a great year in the sunflower league this year. Just a question for Eli, what do you think was the best game between two sunflower league teams this year?
The game I enjoyed watching the most this year between two Sunflower League opponents was in week three when Olathe South beat Free State 38-35. Defensive touchdowns, big plays, scoring... game went down to the wire. Fans were electric on both sides. That was the most memorable league game for sure.

Conga rats to the vikes and vike nation.
Great play on the defensive side of the ball and the ability to capitalize on others mistakes, gotta love it!
Well done Vikes...Well done.
Great Win by West. I'm so glad to See the East side win 2 in a row. Hopefully this becomes a trend.
