SM West 55, SM East 21

Game Recap:

SM West had their way with SM East from the start of the game until the last whistle blew. The Vikings used a running game that was simply overpowering to the SM East defense. SM West split the carries in this game between seniors Darron Harvey and Zach Allen. The one-two punch was an overwhelming attack.

In the first half Harvey scored touchdowns on runs of two and 30 yards, and Allen had scoring runs of two and five yards. SM West led 28-7 at halftime.

It was much of the same in the second half for the Vikings. Senior fullback Justin Scott powered his way into the endzone on a six yard run and Harvey added an eight yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

DJ Balazs then connected with Trevor Arellenes on a 20 yard pass to put the Vikings up 48-7 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Allen added his third touchdown of the day with a 67 yard run.

After a few late fourth quarter scores from SM East, SM West finished the game on top 55-21. The Vikings once again snatched the Nut Cup from the Lancers.

For the day Harvey rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries. Zach Allen added 100 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries.

Accomplishments:

SM West's win Friday night made them Co-Sunflower League Champs with Olathe East on the season, 6A District-1 Champions, and the second seeded team in the Kansas 6A East Bracket.

SM West's league championship is the third in the last four years ('05, '06, '08).

It is the second time SM West has finished a season undefeated under head coach Tim Callaghan. The previous year was 2006. It is also the fourth time in the six years under Callaghan that the Vikings have won at least 9 games.

Playoffs:

By the act of a coin flip Olathe East (9-0) received the #1 seed in the Kansas 6A East bracket over the undefeated Vikings. SM West, however, is lucky to have not received that flip. Olathe East will be facing a very talented Olathe North (7-2) squad with revenge on their minds from a previous defeat. Olathe North lost to Blue Valley in district play and therefore did not receive a numbered seed in the playoffs. By draw Olathe North is now facing Olathe East in the first round game.

The Vikings meanwhile will face a 2-7 Blue Valley Northwest team. So in the case of this year's bracket, being the #2 seed has many advantages for the Vikings.
