Vikes crush Eagles! C'mon Viking Nation let's make the trek to CBAC next week and cheer the black and gold on over the hated Orange. Good chance to come out of this brutal first 4 games at 3-1. Don't count the Vikes out come playoff time. Can't wait to see the stats. VikingStudent have to update me on the game. I'll be there next week.

With Eli talking about how well OS travels, SME having awesome home crowds and it being at SMNDS, I'm thinking that game could be sold out/standing room only! Someone fly me home!

I was so busy this week I forgot to enter my predictions. Oh well I will get back after it next week.

It was the heavyweight battle it was billed to be. Congrats to OS. They played a great game and are worthy of the praise they get. Tons of talent and they use it well. Very well-coached team. FS proved they can play with anyone and will look at the game as one that got away.

I can't figure Leavonworth out. Thats two weeks in a row they cost me. I new they had talent but what happened last week. Good job Pioneers.

Who's Your Daddy said...

I made a barnstormer tour last night and Watched SM East for a quarter. I was very impressed with Darling he made some fantastic throws and has a very strong arm.
The 150lb Terminator had a great game. It's very apparent that Olathe Norths youngsters are beaten down mentally. Hopefully their coaching staff doesn't break their spirit for good. Its refreshing to see the two new coaches Gurley, and Sherman having success. This conference has needed some new blood for a long time. The Missouri coaches are showing the dinosaurs how its done. They instill confidence in their players and it shows on the field.

TheImpaler said...

No offense to OS and LFS but it sounds like it was a sloppy turnover fest. Firebirds, come back to SMS and throw three picks against SMW and we'll see how that turns out. Overall I simply don't think there's that much separation between the top 6 teams and it comes down to execution each game. My power ratings for week 4:(I had to struggle briefly with paying lip service to the records or going with the order I really think these teams are in...the latter won, sorry Lancers):

1. OS
2. LFS
3. SMW
4. SME
5. LAW
6. OE
7. SMS
8. LV
9. SMNW
10. ONW
11. ON
12. SMN

Slugger said...

The Imp,
There certainly were some turnovers in the OS-LFS game, but I wouldn't call it sloppy at all. Each team had one fumble. OS was intercepted twice and FS was intercepted 3 (should have been 4) times. Just two teams going at it. Very physical game. Souths O-Line won that game in the 3rd quarter engineering two 70+ yard drives. All run plays. Sets up a great matchup next week with SME.

Whos's your daddy --I believe Leavenworth ran into a much better team last week. I believe SM South is better than most people think. I watched the monsoon game against SM East, and, except for the turnovers, SMS played them even or better in my opinion. Also, that first Darling TD was very questionable. The line judge farthest away -- who couldn't possibly tell when Darling fumbled the ball -- made the TD call (after the ball was recovered back on the 10). Still, the score is all that matters and SM South shot themselves in the foot with the fumbles. We'll see how the next 3 weeks turn out and especially weeks 5 and 6 vs SMWest and Lawrence. Hopefully, my beliefs will be confirmed.

footballer21 said...

The only thing sloppy in the OS vs. FS game last night was the officiating

TheImpaler said...

Well, SMS you have to show you can stay on the field with one of the top 6 teams. Gabe Guild is the real deal but I am concerned that your defense is going to get gored by teams like SMW and LAW. I don't think you have the team speed to hang with the Sterbinator, etc. and they may well hang 40+ on you. It will be hard for Guild to make up for that. That said if anyone in the bottom six is going to beat any of the top six this year, I think the Raiders have the best chance. Certainly they should go to 3-1 next week against the cougs.

SMS watcher said...

Agreed. SMS needs to win next week and then win one of the SMWest or Lawrence games to move up.

The Biscuit said...

SMS... Play SME in clear weather and they roll you by 30, that's a fact.

SMS watcher said...

Sm east has yet to beat a team with a win in clear weather. Are you living in a fantasy?

The Biscuit said...

East beat South at their game... Only team to keep Guild in check. Start to finish East dominated that game with out question. Must've been blinded by the hurricane... Lol. Clear weather = Darling easily has 300+ yds vs SMS weak defense. Come on man! South is improved but 10 outta 10 times East wins that game come sleet, snow, hurricane or shine.

The Biscuit said...

And btw those were Forced Fumbles... It's not like SMS just dropped balls in open field or bad snaps. East defense deserves the credit for stripping the ball. They've done it all year.

SMS watcher said...

Lol -- just win against quality teams and I'll believe in SM East. Next week will tell a lot -- and, actually, I would like to see a SM team beat Olathe South So far, I have not seen much to believe SM East is for real -- only media hype.

SMS watcher said...

Oh, and btw, is 150 yards keeping Guild in check. Well, maybe for Guild. Dominated? Also, I believe SMS quarterback had more yards passing than Darling. I will give you credit for winning though. Can't argue with the scoreboard. Like I said, win the big games and I'll believe.

The Biscuit said...

Winning the big games? Like districts? Like playoff games? Like Sunflower League Championships?... What media hype? One Star article and that's media hype? Metro super 25 had them at 15 I believe with many teams above them with losses, Rock is above them with a losing record. They're not in the Stars top 10 (yet). Moth people here would have them 4th or lower in the 'power rankings', so what media hype do you speak of? Proof is on the field. 3-0. Weak schedule? You bet. But they've handled their business without doubt in every game thus far like a top team does and with class.

SFL Football said...

I agree with you Biscuit 100%

Slugger said...

Biscuit,

Not sure what you're trying to say, but SME has won only 1 league title since 1966 and won only 1 playoff game since 2004. This week will tell alot about SME.

The Biscuit said...

SMS said East hasn't won any big games. Compared to South we do nothing but win big games. 8 playoff appearances in last 10 seasons...

Slugger said...

Half the teams in the state make the playoffs. Just look at Leavenworth last year. If you want respect, compare yourself to OS, OE, Law, ON or even SMW

What Do I Know? said...

And you've beaten west once in like the last 25 years.

SFL Football said...

Maybe East hasn't beat West much because East has never been a football school. What do you expect with having one of the richest schools in Kansas. It is truly remarkable how Coach Sherman has transformed that school to be one of the best in the sunflower league, so stop bragging about how much better west has been than east in past and wait till October 19 when East is going to spank West.

The Biscuit said...

Overall I'd bet East has more state championships than any other school... Yes East is a country club sport school but at least we dominate them. Other than the CC sports either the hoops squad or baseball team competes for state every year and now we're playing some really decent football too? Best overall athletic program? Probably.

Sunflower_Blogger said...

@biscuit, does East have 107 state championships overall? Lawrence high has 106 so....

What Do I Know? said...

I wasn't bragging. You're an idiot. Slugger said compare them..

The Biscuit said...

East has only been open 50 some years and my guess is that Lawrence High has been open WAY longer than that. Maybe more titles per year open average? Lol. 106 that's a boat load. So at some point the Lions added Chesty after all the 'ships

Todd Haley said...

Biscuit, I am also willing to bet that SME has had the most overall League championships since the SL has been around. The basketball team has been down as of recent. But should be very good this year, and Chip Sherman has made one hell of a turn around at that school. In his 2 years he's beat west and ON for the first time in around 20 years, dominated SMS. 2 playoff births, broke the school win record for a season, won districts both times and won league (co-champ) for first time in 60 years. We may not be known as a football school yet. But if Chip stays around at least 5 years SME will be known as a football school.

Sunflower_Blogger said...

@biscuit , I fully respect what SME has done in their history, I in fact look forward to what darling is doing now and what he is going to do in the future, SME is a very respectable program and with them being good makes the whole league better

Baseball: 3rd
Softball: 2nd
Well above smeast in all of them, south definately has the bet athletics program

The Biscuit said...

None of that is true. Lol. Good luck this week, should be a great atmosphere for a great game!

SMS watcher, I am throwing out the first week results because of the weather. And I believe leavonworth has some excellent talent. Therefore I'm with you on SMS. Until they lose to a projected favorite I'm giving them props as a potential contender. When you've got a back as as good as guild anything can happen. The conference is as even as I've seen in years which is great for Sunflower league football. Good luck!!

@footballer21, true, OSHS has a terrific athletic program, no question. But to call it the best, and far better than SME, is flat out wrong.

East’s titles last year (and yes, I cherry picked, just as you did)…

S&D-Boys 1st
S&D-Girls 1st
Tennis-Girls 1st
Tennis-Boys 1st
Golf-Girls 3rd
Golf-Boys 3rd
Football 5th
Softball 5th
Soccer-Boys 5th

Note that the 5th place finishes are based on losing in the ¼ finals just as you did with OS Baseball.
Looking at these figures, one could argue that SME’s overall performance exceeded that of OSHS’s

And to the question of total titles from the LHS fan. True, LHS has 106 titles acquired over 154 years. That averages to .7 per school year. East has only 95 to your 106 but in 54 years, that averages to 1.8 per school year.

SME you are correct on the school titles for LHS however something tells me they weren't battling it out for football and baseball prowess in 1857...the first championship won was in 1914 in basketball......106 since then, oh yeah and don't forget the 31 undefeated football seasons, that my friend not only leads, the area and the state, it leads the entire USA.....all you Johnson County schools have a good thing going but in no way will any of you in JC or the Sunflower league match our history or tradition. When Shawnee Mission gets a nod from ESPN as one of 25 Title Towns in the US come talk.......

The Biscuit said...

Didn't that 'title town' include KU as well? Yeah that doesn't count...

footballer21 said...

Okay you win in sports where how good you are is based purely on how much money your parents are willing to spend on lessons, but in sports that require actuall athletic abilities not so much

SMEaster1214 said...

@seth, 31 undefeated years is awesome, no one will ever be able to take that, or other accomplishments, away from you. Not what i was trying to do, sorry if it came off that way...

@footballer21, I appreciate you spewing garbage about what you think an athlete is. So what you are saying is that tennis & swimming (I'm a golfer but I'll give you that one) take only money, and no athletic ability simply because your school isn't as competitive in these sports. I didn't include Football, Soccer or Softball there because these sports seem to pass your standard of what a sport is.
All this after i complemented your schools athletic program...

@both of you, all i was really trying to do was to say that if there is a discussion of the best overall athletic program in the league, SME belongs...not dogging either of your terrific progams at all.

It's not bad for the league to have several really good programs, or several good teams in different sports. In fact I see it as really good for the league in general.

Go Lancers...

Well said SME....didn't mean to come off harsh either, I had been arguing with a free state fan earlier....they can be rather annoying

Who's Your Daddy said...

Olathe east has to be among the most prolific Schools when it comes to all sports. Girls and boys soccer are both incredible. Girls Softball is dominate. Track & field in both Boys &Girls have multiple State Championships. Which makes it even more disturbing that Jeff Meyers has never won anything on the football field. Now that the league competition level has been raised by Coaches like Gurley and Sherman Coach Meyers is being exposed as the average and overrated coach that he truly is. It's sad because football is still the premiere sport for any School. It would be nice to see Coach Umphrey get a chance with that talent.

I'm not saying that they aren't good athletes I'm just saying that it takes a lot of money to get the necessary lessons to be great in those sports, if Souths athletes got the same lessons they would be just as good, you guys seriously do dominate them though
