Week Eight Matchups
All games times 7 pm unless otherwise noted
Olathe North (7-0) at Blue Valley West (3-4)
Last week was the first time all season that Olathe North showed a bit of vulnerability defensively. One-win Blue Valley even held the lead during part of the game. This week Olathe North will be facing another relatively unknown opponent from the EKL. After an upset win over Olathe South last week, the Jaguars from Blue Valley West will be pumped to try and pull another one on the Eagles.
Olathe South (4-3) at Blue Valley (1-6)
Both these teams had a chance at victory last week, but neither was able to pull it out. Now it is do-or-die time. The loser of this game will be all but eliminated from the playoffs, and that would be a major disappointment for either of these teams who showed promise in the first week of district play.
SM Northwest (4-3) at SM East (3-4)
Contrary to what would be expected, it's the Lancers from SM East who hold a one game advantage on SM Northwest in the second week of district play. Expect SM Northwest to rely heavily on their smash mouth running game, featuring senior running back John Hauk.
SM North (2-5) at SM West (6-1)
It will be a tall task for SM North to avoid losing their sixth straight game. The Vikings from SM West have been elevating their level of play from week to week as well as any team in the league, and likely that hasn't changed this past week. SM North is going to need some big breaks to go their way in this one to give them a chance at winning.
Lawrence (0-7) at Lawrence Free State (5-2)
All the negativity surrounding the 2009 season for Lawrence high would be swept away if the Chesty Lions could somehow pull an upset in this crosstown rivalry. Lawrence has nothing to lose--while the Free State Firebirds have quite a bit of pride involved in winning, and not being the team that LHS breaks its losing streak against.
Blue Valley North (3-4) at Olathe East (4-3)
Olathe East was able to put together a pretty decent second half and near comeback against Blue Valley Northwest last Friday, but being close won't do it from here out. Blue Valley North played a very complete game in a 21-3 victory over SM South to advance their district record to 1-0 last week, and the Mustangs will surely be up for the Hawks of Olathe East--and visa-versa.
SM South (3-4) at Blue Valley Northwest (6-1)
Now is the point in time in which SM South will really have to step up if they have any chance whatsoever at making the playoffs. Unfortunately for the Raiders the game comes against Blue Valley Northwest, a team that has suffered only one loss and has been playing red hot lately.
Olathe Northwest (3-4) at Leavenworth (0-7)
High times at Olathe Northwest can continue assuming the team doesn't overlook lowly Leavenworth. A victory would nearly guarantee the Ravens a playoff berth, something the school has only had once in its previous five years of football.
