How bout that Lancer D?! I believe they've only allowed 7 points on at least 8 red zone attempts all year, while forcing 5 turn overs. Bend but don't break! Darling had a break out half but needs to put a complete game together. Connor Rellihan is doing it all. Int, tackles, punts, fake punt runs, fake punt passes, running the ball on sweeps, big catches in traffic, YAC and TDs... No one in the SL has had a more of an impact in a game this year than him tonight. No doubt SL player of the week. Mark it down! Lancers 2-0 going to ONW next week to beat up on ex Coach Dain!

Govannon Grey said...

I was at that game. Rehllihan is a stud. Darling is GOOD, but as a Division 1 prospect... eh...(just my opinion). If Olathe North, basically starting a Sophomore team on offense, stops turning the ball over (I think Murphy has 7 INTs in 2 games) they would have at least made it a more entertaining game.

Eli Underwood said...

Rellihan is the real deal. Like Biscuit said, he did it all tonight. Two touchdown receptions (one of 70+ yards), an interception, a completed pass, a fourth down conversion, a few tackles, and probably 7-10 catches for around 150 yards. Kid's a stud. And a likely candidate for next week's installment of the Top 5 Player Ratings.

I know one thing forsure after last nights game coach weir is willing to sacrifice this year for wins next year. I probably will not pick ON to win a game until the last couple weeks of the season.

Rellihan Is a player, but he is cocky and doesn't need the attention Eli, the real story of the night was marshawn lynch, or should I say Patrick Blackburn.

Granted I haven't seen SME in person, but so far they've knocked off SMS and ON. Not your top of the pack teams. I think SME will be good, but we'll see when the competition steps up.

Soccer Lover's Week 2 picks,
Olathe South-SMN= 42-0 (Olathe South)
SME-ON= Result, SME, VOID
ONW-OE= 35-7 (Olathe East)
LV-SMS= 35-28 (Leavenworth)
SMW-Freestate= 35-21 (Freestate)
SMNW-Lawrence= 35-10 (Lawrence)

Very true Slugger but they were dominate victories controlling from start to finish. There's something to be said for them only allowing 1 TD in 2 games. Plus the defense has created turnovers all year then the offense has been able to capitalize and turn them into points. Not to mention the best coach in the SL... Going to CBAC next week for first road game vs ONW and ex Coach Dain. They better not cut the grass all week (as usual) to slow down the Lancer passing and rushing attack!

TheImpaler said...

Grass? Did you see the OE/OS game last week? It's going to be like playing on the moon.

Slugger said...

Biscuit,
You're going to have to wash that kool-aid smile from your face and back away from the pitcher. Until Coach Sherman wins a 6A championship, we'll reserve titling him the best coach in the conference. SME has performed well against the bottom of the conference. Remember ON from last year? 5-0 against the worst teams, then 0-4 against the top teams. Now I think SME, along with SMW, LAW, LFS, OE, and OS are all capable of winning this league. We'll have to wait and see.

TheImpaler said...

Smeast sched:

9/20 Olathe South
9/28 Olathe East
10/5 @ Lawrence Free State
10/12 @ SM Northwest
10/19 @ SM West

Just saying 3-0 could become 3-5 real fast. It's going to take more than Relihan and Darling to survive that murderer's row. We'll see.

The Biscuit said...

So here's my point on Sherman being the best coach in the SL: he has elevated SHAWNEE MISSION EAST TO A PERINNIAL POWER IN THE LEAGUE IN UNDER 4 YEARS! Again SME... If I were to bet on Easts all time win average I'd put it at a little over 3 wins per season. 4 years ago you could always pencil in East as a win, East used to be everyone's Homecoming game. Not to mention he's one of the winningest coaches in the KC metro area of all time. He and Gene Weir are 1a and 1b in no specific order. These are facts. I have been around SME football for all 28 years of my life, my dad played for east, my uncles played at east, I am the youngest of 3 boys who all played for East. He is a special special Coach, if he had been at East his entire career I guarantee East would have a 6A state title. I've seen so much wasted talent walking the halls at East quitting because of bad coaching, my senior years starting O Line was in the stands. Sherman has somehow kept East kids playing, motivated and has coached them up to an unseen level at East.

The Biscuit said...

And we have decent crowds now... Ask Eli about the packed house last night

The Biscuit said...

My picks:
SMW over FS
Lawrence over NW
OE over ONW
OS over SMN
LV over South

TheImpaler said...

3 picks for the Vikes' QBs tonight. McFarland just too tough, West had no answer for him. Watch out for Free State.

Soccerlover1080 said...

Watch out for The two Lawrence teams! Strauss and Jenkins had the Lawrence Lions rolling tonight. I would definitely not want to miss the Lawrence high Freestate game this year, great matchup!

TheImpaler said...

Week 2 pick 'em results:

Okay I'm going to try to paste from a spread sheet and see what comes out on the blog. I cannot take picks posted after the game starts. Standings will be done by Games back since people will miss weeks and/or come in late so we won't have the same number of games. I've put in percentage also. O South score isn't posted final yet but I'm going to assume their 43-0 lead is going to hold up.

Any question about Free State being able to beat a good defense should be answered now... 401 yards through the air and on the ground. 2-0 ON THE ROAD with no turnovers (in Hurricane Isaac and against a good D) with 7 takeaways of their own. Defense should be getting props too.

Just a word of caution to opposing coaches and d-lineman who will play this year against SMW. They cut-block and chop-block like crazy and not the submarine-style blocking that is legal. No, these are deliberate, from the blind-side shots aimed directly at knees. Free State plays a 3-man front and FOUR FS d-linemen were limping around by halftime. Figure the math on that one out. Callahan needs to correct this dirty blocking technique. Video does not lie...

Govannon Grey said...

Free State Fan: I saw that too. Watching the game, I saw #79 and #74 come out limping on back to back plays. No flags were thrown and they were in the free blocking zone. You could say it is still "cheap" even though it's legal, but you could also say that their D-Lineman aren't using their hands to protect themselves against cut blocking. It's all the technique that is coached. But you are right, as of right Now I would say Free State is def. top three in the league right now (With O South and SM East)

Free State Fan said...

GG - You can't use your hands to protect yourself when they are cutting you from the side and from behind. You are right, that is coaching and it needs to be addressed by SMW coaches or some alert officiating crew will march their offense back 15 yards at a time.

Govannon Grey said...

If you line up on the Line of scrimmage, from Tackle to tackle (The free blocking zone), you can legally be blocked in any manner. In the back, on the legs, etc. The only thing that's illegal is the High-low chop block where one guy blocks you above the waist and the other blocks you below. You can point it out the the officials all you want, but no one is marching back 15 yards at a time. Sorry but that's just the breaks of playing D-Line.

Eli Underwood said...

Cut blocking (red blocking) is an essential element of SMW's offensive schemes. I would guess they do it more than any team in the league and have for quite some time now.

TheImpaler said...

You could also say that FS's linemen and receivers were holding on every play and the officials weren't calling that either. In fact they weren't calling much of everything including blatant offensive PI and two touchdowns when West runners broke the plane twice on the opening series.

Not to take anything away from FS, they are very tough and McFarland is as good as I've seen at QB both running and an accurate passer. Vikes have got to get better at QB. Verdini was better than last week but still two unforced errors, the second pick was extremely costly and just a bad decision throwing a wounded duck into triple coverage. Rice was no better. One of these guys has to step it up if West is going to be a serious factor.

The punt at the end of the first half, just a fiasco. Didn't understand why they were lined up to try and run out the last 6.4 seconds then changed their mind after the Ill Proc penalty. How is the situation any different? You can still run a pitch play or something and run out the clock. Kicking that ball was a mistake. And if you're going to punt, you pooch it along the ground so it can't be returned. Lots to work on, Vikes.

Free State Fan said...

I understand and know blocking schemes and the free blocking zone. I was directly referring to chop blocks, not cut blocks, with the 15 yard penalty comment. I give SMW a lot of credit in their overall scheme and use of cut blocking. When used effectively and legally, it works. As EI points out, SMW uses chop blocking so much that they probably don't realize when their teammate is engaged high. Nobody wants a kid to get hurt. Gotta be careful out there.

Verdini's first interception was for sure pass interference though, the free state DBs, actually just mcfarland should have had many penalties also. The way it seemed to me though was that free state was just out playing west and west got upset and just started to try and get in fights, i saw multiple times them just hitting people on the ground.

TheImpaler said...

It was a very frustrating game. Much closer than the score would indicate. I think you play that game 10 times it's 5-5 or 6-4. Unfortunately vikes come up on the short end. A couple calls go the other way and maybe it's overtime. Still it's HS football, first 6 games don't matter for crap. Plenty of time to get better. Focus on ON next and then the big rivalry game with an OE team that was not exactly gangbusters against ONW. Good chance to be 8-1 this year if they can find some decent play at QB. Rest of the team looks solid. Sterbach was great. Maloney and Spiller good at WR if someone can get them the ball. And what's with this 6'7" 205 lb TE? I have to think that is a weapon to be explored. Coach will whip 'em into shape, you can count on that.

SFL Football said...

So far SM East and OS look the best to me. McFarland is good for Free State, but SM East's linebackers and OS's d-line will destroy him.

Todd Haley said...

The Biscuit, speaking of bad coaches for SME. Whats the reasoning for ONW to keep around Dain? theyve been just completely terrible in the years hes been there and besides a couple playoff wins at east, he was terrible there too.

Alec Dinges is thE 6'7" TE

West cut blocks, that's what they do and what they've done for a long time. After playing there for years I can tell you though that the scheme is set up to be completely legal. On the backside of plays that go outside the backside lineman all stay low and cut whoever is in the hole to the inside of them. This is completely and totally legal and in no way a chop block like you described. Yes it can be rough on the defenses knees, but that's football, there's plenty of ways to defend it.

SFL, so far SME has beat SMS and ONW. Not exactly a tough opening two weeks. Right now I'd have to put LFsS and OS a top the league which sets up this weeks game as the one to watch. SME has a date with OS coming up soon also. The next few weeks are going to be very interesting

Govannon Grey said...

I think Slugger means SME has played SMS and O-NORTH.

SFL Football said...

Yes, but have you seen East's linebackers? They are animals. I just don't see how McFarland will be able do anything with the Stewarts flying all over the field, but i do agree that SME vs. OS will be a great game. Both great teams with completely different styles of play.

Slugger said...

Correct on a couple of comments. Yes I meant that SME had beat ON and no I haven't seen SME linebackers. I have seen OS defense and it's played amazing so far anchored by returning All State Denfensive lineman and All State Linebacker.

SFL Football said...

If SME's defense can stay healthy, which they haven't in the past years which is why no one has probably heard much about them, they can be something really special.

Seth Nation said...

I think all of you are overlooking Lawrence High, yes they gave up some chances against SMW, should have won the game but it is what it is....no other QB in the league can touch Strauss, nor has the weapons he has at his disposal. A young O-line got caught off guard in the first game, they flat out dominated the second.....Watch and see folks

SFL Football said...

I agree with you seth, but the only thing that will hurt them is that young offensive line. If you look at SME, OE, LFS, and especially OS they all have great lines, and I really think that will be Lawrence's achilles heal all year. I still think they will have a very good year maybe losing three games.

Seth Nation said...

Could be, they are starting two juniors who are beasts, we can see how the season plays out, but if i were a betting man, I say it will come down to Lawrence and Free State for all the marbles

Seth Nation said...

Another thing to keep in mind, is that LHS only has two more road games @ SMN, and @ Wyandotte, playing at home against OE and OS will be a big factor. Should be an interesting season.

footballer21 said...

I would say the most impressive defense hase certainly been OS, the starters haven't allowed a score yet an only 4-5 first downs, however their weakness has been spread offenses in the past, which with fs, sme and law coming up could be interesting.

I've been logging the plays for Olathe East this season. Meyers only ran 4 plays outside the tackles on Friday night. If it hadn't been for poor tackling by ONW they could have won that game. Normally a good ratio of run pass is 70-30. East has run the SAME PLAY over 65% of the time on the season. That is as embarrassing of a stat that you will ever see. Your past your time Meyers. Retire please!!

Sunflower_Blogger said...

I agree with Seth, Lawrence lost one close game in a hurricane to a team that isn't as great as everyone keeps saying. We saw what Lawrence high can do in dry conditions this previous week.

The Biscuit said...

Dain is a smooth talker... He's a great guy too. He's everything you want as a varsity football coach, young, good looking, great public speaker. Not a winner though. He was only at East 3 seasons (my soph, junior and senior year) and we won districts back to back first time in school history, won playoff games 2 years in a row also for the first time in school history too. His offense is not good. It simply doesn't work. My varsity seasons we should have been way better than we ended up. We had some players but his coaching held us back IMHO and he didn't trust his DC and stepped on a lot of Assistant coaches toes. That being said other than him leaving East and the way he did it, I have a lot of respect for him and he helped me out a lot personally when I was having a tough time. Also I don't think he's getting a ton of players at ONW, other than the 3 players last year I don't think they've had any talent go through there, right? Hard to say.

SFL Football said...

East has probably ran the same play 65% of the time because they didn't need to do any other play. I can guarantee you that any offense Chip Sherman has will be one of the most complex in the league. Why show other teams who are watching film on the game more of the playbook if you don't have to?

Anonymous said...

Hey SFL, I am Talking about Olathe East not SM East. I love Coach Sherman's offense. I followed him when he was at Platte County. Olathe East has no offense to hide from scouts. We will see the next two weeks what secrets Coach Meyers has up his sleeve. Unfortunately I know there are none. Great players and bad Coaching equals 1-4 after week 5.

SFL Football said...

ya i totally agree with you
