2011 Player Spotlights: Matthew Baltimore

Matthew Baltimore
Olathe East

Position: Defensive End
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 230 lbs.
Year: Senior

Stat to Note
As a junior, Baltimore was a Second Team All-Sunflower League selection as a defensive end.

Scouting Report
Baltimore is a pass rushing nightmare for opposing head coaches and coordinators.  Not only does he have great length for shedding blockers, but he's also a gifted athlete with speed to burn around the end.  There won't be many, if any defensive ends as athletic as Baltimore in the Sunflower League in the upcoming season.

Last season Baltimore recorded 17.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two forced fumbles, and nine pass deflections.  His nine sacks were two less than that of Olathe North's Tanner Gentry--which further fuels the question as to which of the two players will be the more dominant defensive end in 2011?

For now, let the debate rage on.  Much of that discussion will be played out as the season goes along and the one thing that is for sure is that Baltimore's motor won't stop going, so long as he's on the field for Olathe East.  Baltimore has had concussion issues in the past and hopefully those won't be an issue for the talented senior this season.

SME has a pair of talented D ends as well. Its going to be fun watching the overated Olathe schools bask in the hype and underperform once again.

Anonymous said...

under perform again? first of all, Olathe North made it to STATE! Second, both teams in last year's Sub-State game were from OLATHE. Finally, it was Olathe South who defeated redhot SME in the first round.

Anonymous said...

No kidding. Dude you can't come on here and say Olathe is over rated when all SME has done in the last decade is make the playoffs once. ON and OE will be two of the top teams in the league like they are every year.

Anonymous said...

Having watched both players, I know what the stats say, but I feel Baltimore is more physically talented then Gentry, and will be the superior player. That's not saying that Gentry is bad at all.

Anonymous said...

we'll see who's better in week one!

Anonymous said...

Week one means nothing. It is not where you start, but where you end that counts. Last year's OE team is a good example. They never really improved through-out the season. State champions are crowned in November not September.

Anonymous said...

^ Totally agree. OE shut out ON the first game, and lost in the semifinals when it mattered.

SME needs their own web site. I didn't even know they had a football team. Once again, SME is a debate and swimming school, never football and never will be. If the field floods watch out for the Lancers, they can do some serious back stroke and butterfly.Olathe schools dominate, always have and always will, this year no different. OE will once again disappoint late in the season as their coach spends more time being the mayor than coaching football.

other then a lucky win from OE beating ON last season. SME should have beat ON. 2 fumbles in the red zone and 2 dropped TDs. @ TD called back on refs being from hick town america. OLATHE. ON players will tell you that SME vs ON was there toughest game until Heights

Anonymous said...

Has anyone else noticed how a new coach can change everything? or does that not matter. SME went from no playoffs with stonner, first year playoffs with sherman then next year a share of the league title with Sherman. Who knows whats next for SME

Anonymous said...

Also the stats for Baltimore might be down because he missed 2 games i think from that concussion. so he could be at Gentrys level or better.

Anonymous said...

EagleSophomre must be pretty out of the loop in the ON football program if he didnt know SME fielded a football team. SME payed you the last two years...

that was Eaglelover... seriously???

A little advice to SME fan. The only statemnt that cannot come back to haunt you is silence. Heed these words Lancer fan. Until you consistenly win in this league SHUT IT!!!!

Anonymous said...

What's a statemnt?

Anonymous said...

It's amazing how all of you Olathe fans get so so worked up over a comment section on a high school football league blog. Get a life and stop living through the kids who play on the field on Friday nights.

Anonymous said...

Yet still you keep coming back to read them. Seems like you could maybe listen to your own words hypocript.

Anonymous said...

Hypocript?

Mr. First Down said...

Hypocrit!

Anonymous said...

Hypocript???? The Olathe education is awesome.

Anonymous said...

funny how people connect typing errors to bad education

I think the new SME quarterback Dakota Collins should be the next spotlight player....

Anonymous said...

Isnt that kid from wyandotte and shawnee mission north?? What stats has he put up? Why would you make a player spotlight about him? what could you even summarize about him just ask a bunch of question like who he even is?matter fact does he have a picture to use?

Anonymous said...

Dakota Collins doesn't have much to show for but he has a big arm capable of 50-60yard passes with good blocking. Who knows what kind of an offensive line SMEast will have. They seem pretty big though. As an unbiased commenter I'm predicting him to shine pretty well this season with Elliot Faerber catching his passes.

SM East goes 6'2" 220, 6'5" 270, 6'1" 240, 6'3" 240 and 6' 260 up front.

Anonymous said...

SME has decided to go with no offensive line this year. They'll play with a center, a qb, and 9 receivers respectively.

Anonymous said...

Size of the line means little if they cannot play. One thing that I have noticed about KS football is that the smaller, more agile lines seem to have to the most success. So, the questions I have is can they play? Can they continue to improve through-out the season?

Anonymous said...

This is a great site that Eli runs. Would be great to see more football discussion instead of the name calling. From an ON fan's perspective until we played Heights, I thought SME was the one team that could beat us when it counted. The question will be can SME still play at that level?

Anonymous said...

shawnee mission east has a very small line but the toughest in the league forsure espcially the two guards i hear one spent time in jail.

MOONEYS A CANCER

Anonymous said...

Yeah I heard he dropped the soap quite a few times in jail, too.

Anonymous said...

SME has the best offensive guard in the league. He's being recruited by everybody. Not for football, but for special operation purposes. The navy, marines, army, they all want him. Ever heard of seal team six? Well it will be called seal team Alex Beahm by the time he's done his damage. Watch out for this kid.

Anonymous said...

hm... ^ I don't think it works that way.

Anonymous said...

Well if the "Mooney is a cancer" guy thinks having spent time in jail makes for a tough football player, he must agree the Olathe North football team is one of the toughest teams in the Sunflower League.

Anonymous said...

You know you can take all the shots at Olathe North you want, but they just keep going about their business. I think this video says it all.

Please SME bloggers find a different web site, we only talk serious football here. Go somewhere else to look for grammatical errors. You guys get satisfaction from finding spelling errors, we get satisfaction in winning championships.

Anonymous said...

EagleLover for sure used spell check to make sure that sentence didn't have any grammatical errors.

Anonymous said...

SME won a share of the league championship last year lets not forget. It looks like you can win championships and catch pesky grammatical errors at the same time.

Anonymous said...

What about state championships...?

Anonymous said...

Real impressive with a four way tie for a League championship. I wouldn't toot your horn too loudly until the winning becomes a habit.
I will give it to East for a good season last year but slow your roll until you can prove it wasn't a fluke.

Anonymous said...

Smeast looked real bad when they played Osouth..... Osouth beat the crap of Smeast both on offense and defense... I was not impressed with Smeast at all....

Anonymous said...

SME lost by 4 points...idk how you get the crap beat out of you on both sides of the ball and only lose by 4

Anonymous said...

The OS SME game was back and firth the whole game. sME offense looked great however because many players play both ways the defense got beat pretty bad

Orange Mooney said...

Who ya got this year for the ship? The pricks from OE and SME or ON who always wins? ya get at me fool aint nobody tackle dis mofo

Anonymous said...

SMS beat SME in 09 And had them clearly beat in 08 as well if not for the refs getting payed off by east

Anonymous said...

in regards to the last comment, we can all agree that anyone from SMS needs to stfu. SMS has had 2 coaches in the last 5 years quit because they couldnt deal with being involved with the school. SMS starting QB is a pussy ginger along with half the team. They are from the slums of Johnson County and shouldnt have the right to field a football team for how terrible they are.

Anonymous said...

There are 3 teams that have not had a winning season this decade. Leavenworth(there is no hope). Olathe Northwest(needs new coach). and Shawnee Mission South(no athletes in the area). The district is actually having to change the border of SMS and SME. because few people go to SMS. There have been 24 families this year that have moved to SME area to avoid sending there child to SMS

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, because Orange definitly talks like that. Some information for whoever wrote that comment... he's not that cocky

Orange Mooney said...

I Orange Mooney, Am in fact a cancer! Safe to say the thought of Alex Beahm sends shivers down my spine.

Anonymous said...

In regards to the comment about how SMS should not be able to field a football team the same has been said about SME for along time and one season you won and now the lancers are acting Like they are at the same level as Olathe north and the perennial powers of the SL if I were them I would shut my mouth until you can back it up a round one loss is not that impressive

Alan Twitty said...

^ Your statement warrants punctuation.

Eaglelover said...

Please don't put SME and football in the same sentence, they don't belong together. SME football is a joke, has always been a joke and will remain a joke. SME bloggers, please go to the site www.weluvtoswim.com and talk to the other boys about your swim team.

Beaglelover said...

You just put SME and Football in 2 sentences. Congratulations, you're an idiot.

i think the new OE transfer Kendall Kelly should have a player spotlight. 2 years starting with shawnee mission north this year he had a little over 600yds and 6tds in 6 games. he had very little blockers at smn and is getting put into a good running football team system. i think it'll be exciting to see him get some playing time against ON in the first game
