2012 Player Spotlights: Matt Elliott

Matt Elliott.  PrepsKC.
Matt Elliott
Olathe South

Position: Defensive Back
Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 185 lbs.
Year: Senior

Stat to Note
With Olathe South facing a 4th and 10 in the fourth quarter of 2011 state title game, Elliott caught a wheel route out of the backfield and took the ball 24 yards for a first down.  The first down led to a game-winning touchdown several plays later.

Scouting Report
Elliott is a hard kid to plan for because he impacts the game in so many different ways.  Last season on defense he had 33 tackles and four interceptions including one return for a touchdown.  On offense he added 561 receiving yards, 389 rushing yards and combined for six touchdowns.  He also added a kick return touchdown and a punt return touchdown.

He's clearly one of the most versatile returning players in the Sunflower League, and his contributions to Olathe South will be essential for them to repeat as Class 6A champions.  With the loss of the Falcon's top receiving threat, Drew Johnson, to graduation, it will be interesting to see if Elliott has an increased workload at the receiver position, or if he'll maintain a healthy balance between catching passes and running the football.

Regardless of how Olathe South uses him next season he's going to be one of the most exciting players to watch in 2012 as he works to bring the title to Olathe South in consecutive seasons.

If I had to write a spotlight for an ON player at this point i would choose... Offensive Lineman Alex Maggard or Ryan Garrett. Though Maggard had some injury problems I feel if he can stay healthy the O-Line should be fine.

Garrett seemed rather consistent throughout the season and his size should help on either side he plays. Combined along with possible Center Sean Ceballos and whoever takes over the next two positions the O-Line for Olathe North is looking good.

Of course no positions are secure right now but they seem to be the most likely starters out of the entire team.

if i had to pick a spotlight player for this year i will say Running back Elbert Johnson and Quarter back/ Wideout Dontez Sanchez Johnson can pound the ball all day Sanchez is like a tripple threat to the D he can run, pass, and catch they have a great Oline their O is set.

And on the ON D they got speed on the secondary hard hitters size strength and good hands what more do yu need everyone on the team is smart and is getting smarter Weir will have them set by Fall

Eh, I kind of hope Sophomore QB Cole Murphy is given a chance to shine while Dontez Sanchez works on wideout. Murphy was the primary passer for the JV squad when healthy and can run the ball when necessary.

The bottom line is that I hope they use a similar process of Murphy starting QB with Sanchez being wideout and backup for Murphy.

As for Elbert Johnson he was a simple beast on JV. His speed and power was incredible to watch. Especially when he was sprinting down the sideline for 20+ yards nearly every game.
