2012 Player Spotlights: Erick Mayo

Erick Mayo. Lawrence Journal World.
Erick Mayo
Lawrence

Position: Wide Receiver/Cornerback
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 175 lbs.
Year: Senior

Stat to Note
Mayo was one of quarterback Brad Strauss' top targets in 2011, catching 31 passes for 519 yards and four touchdowns.

Scouting Report
Mayo will be one of the league's biggest gamebreakers in 2012--mark it down.  He had a great season last year splitting catches with two top flight receivers in Anthony Buffalomeat and Drake Hofer.  This year, with Buffalomeat gone, he and Hofer will be Strauss' go-to receivers, so the adjusted production should be phenomenal.

Mayo has elite speed--he's without a doubt among the league's top 10 fastest players--and his agility is off the charts.  Last season his calling card was out of the slot receiver position.  Lawrence ran a variety of slip screens, jet sweeps and everything in between to put the ball in his hands and most of the time it worked out very well, as Mayo put up 698 yards of total offense in Lawrence's 10 games.

Looking ahead to this fall I'm excited to see what all Mayo is able to do.  Some players are gritty, some are boring, and then some like Mayo are just downright fun to watch.  He's basically a highlight waiting to happen every time he touches the football.  Players like Mayo should have the LHS faithful very excited about 2012.
