Sunflower League Extra: Week Five

Kyle McFarland. LJWorld.
Top 5 Player Ratings

1. Brad Strauss, Quarterback, Lawrence
Week Four Stats: 10-of-19 passing, 159 yards, 3 TDs; 11 carries, 124 yards, 2 TDs

Nobody consistently fills out a box score like Strauss.  Even more important--his team is winning.  LHS has a big test this week against Olathe South.  How Strauss does against a team as good as Olathe South will go a long way in determining both what we can expect from LHS down the line and Strauss' chances at Simone contention.

2. Gabe Guild, Running Back, SM South
Week Four Stats: 44 carries, 300 yards, 3 TDs; 1 reception, 21 yards

Topping the 300-yard rushing barrier for the second time in his career was nice.  I would suspect it won't be the last time he does it this season.  Like the aforementioned Strauss, Guild has a huge game this Thursday against SM West.  We'll see how he runs against the very solid Viking defense.

3. Kyle McFarland, Quarterback, Free State
Week Four Stats: 13-of-29 passing, 215 yards, 2 TDs; 19 carries, 101 yards, 2 TDs

McFarland was extremely efficient in his team's week four win over Olathe North, accumulating 316 yards and four touchdowns on the 30 plays he kept or threw the ball.  He should do just as well this week when Free State takes on the 0-4 SM North Indians.

4. Jason Randall, Running Back, Leavenworth
Week Four Stats: 28 carries, 236 yards, 2 TDs

Randall had a great game against Olathe Northwest, scoring the go ahead touchdown late.  His Pioneers travel to face Olathe North this Friday, a team not generally noted for their ability to stop the run.  On paper the game looks like it could be close and how Randall performs will likely determine the outcome of the game.

5. Brett Sterbach, Running Back, SM West
Week Four Stats: 25 carries, 132 yards

For the most part Sterbach was held in check against Olathe East, with only one carry of more than 20 yards.  However, it was his four, five and six yard battering runs that seemed to take their toll on the Hawk defense.  In time Olathe East's defense loaded the box and focused mostly on the run, allowing the Vikings to score a few passing touchdowns with ease.

Honorable Mention: Connor Rellihan, SM East; Jordan Darling, SM East; Remington Whitley, Olathe South; Patrick Blackburn, SM East; Hayden Frazier, Olathe East; Matt Elliott, Olathe South; Braden Smith, Olathe South; Will Thompson, Lawrence.
