Sunflower League Extra & Social Media Standings

Player ratings are subject to change on a weekly basis.

1. Venus Triplett, Running Back, Olathe North
Week One Stats: 16 carries, 71 yards, 2 TDs; 1 PR TD

Although he was held under 100 yards rushing, Triplett played as good of a game as you can ask for, scoring three touchdowns and totaling over 150 all-purpose yards.

2. Joe Dineen, Quarterback, Lawrence Free State
Week One Stats: 6-of-9 passing, 73 yards, 2 TDs; 8 carries, 58 yards, 1 TD

Dineen lived up to his preseason billing in week one, basically dominating the one half he actually played. Don't be shocked if he finishes the year in the 1,000/1,000 club.

3. Jake Suerer, Quarterback, Olathe South
Week One Stats: 8-of-12 passing, 219 yards, 4 TDs; 4 carries, 32 yards; 14 tackles, 1 INT

As impressive as his offensive efforts were, Seurer might have played better on defense, recording double-digit tackles and a interception. If he continues to play like that he'll be atop this list in no time.

4. Andre Maloney, Cornerback, SM West
Week One Stats: 2 catches, 57 yards, 1 TD; 3 tackles

Maloney is almost untouchable in open field. Seriously, if you thought his highlight reel was impressive last year wait until this fall. And he also has his cornerback position on complete lockdown.

5. Ra'Keim Abdul, Safety, SM South
Week One Stats: 17 carries, 96 yards; 2 catches, 11 yards; 4 tackles

Abdul only played one half before suffering a significant leg cramp which completely limited his action in the third and fourth quarters. A cramp-free Abdul could have rushed for 150 yards against SM West.

Most Interactive Schools

1. Olathe South: The Falcons have unquestionably dominated the Social Media Standings since their inception last year. Win or lose, they support Falcon football with a passion unmatched by any school in the league (or state for that matter). It will be interesting to see how they travel this week to SM South District Stadium.

2. Lawrence: Football is deeply rooted in the LHS culture, and I see it every week on Twitter.  When the Olathe South faithful aren't Tweeting my way, it's the LHS crowd that fills up my interactions. Keep it up, Chesties.

3. N/A: Honestly, outside of Olathe South and LHS, the majority (save a few here and there) of the follows and interactions have been from the players themselves.  Will fans at the other schools pick it up this week or will the Falcons and Chesty Lions dominate the rest of the way? We shall see.

WYD, that's 80 combined tackles for Leavenworth for only their top 5 tacklers. LOL Seems like something similar happened at the start of last season for OS. Maybe the new SME offense is just like the Eagles offense in the first half of MNF and they ran 100 offensive plays? Maybe missed tackles count, too?

I must be hearing things and seein em’ 2!; me and 1000 others, somebody please tell me who Mitch Kennedy is and when did he make a tackle LET ALONE 11?! RANDAL BYERS killed the feild all nite supporting his team to the fullest....ALL THE WAY TO THE COMEBACK AND WIN!! Especially the spectacular goal line stop. The kid is D1 statud all the way! I tell you what I don't see is them other TWO SACKS ON THE BOY STATS come on now let's get it rite give em' ALL his dues SHOW EM' SOME LOVE AND STOP HATIN’

I think Randall Byers should be up for the Heisman, his PR campaign is out of sight. Each post contains clever misspellings, creative nicknames, bold predictions, and subtle usage of ALL CAPS. Also the feeling of teamwork oozes from each post, I mean seriously does ONW even need the other 10 players on the field when you have Mr. Showtime?

I could be speaking out of turn, but I seriously doubt Eli was at every game last week taking stats down and looking for kids to hype. Going out on a limb with a wild guess here... he is forwarded info and puts it in the blog. Every stat won't be recorded every week, folks. Relax, be thankful and enjoy. Go 'Birds!

Chanda-Mae, Calm down !! First of all you should be celebrating a teammate whether he had 11 or 1 tackle. I'm sure nobody has an Ax to grind for your Randall. If he is as good as you think he is he will lead the league in every category. LOL Let us know when Alabama and Texas offer. Seriously let the boy play his season out and quit hovering like a helicopter Mommy. Trust me You will scare College coaches off with your individualist attitude. Can't wait to see him against OE this week.

I've followed Eli and this blog for a few years. Love it.
I really do enjoy the lively back-and-forth of proud parents and passionate fans. At the same time a bit of restraint can be a cool thing too.
I'm more about paying some respect to each kid that has the guts to strap on a helmet and go to battle on Friday nights. I'll be at CBAC Friday for OE vs ONW and I will watch for Byers - I wish him the best.

Nothing was ever started. Let the kids play, if they are good they will get noticed. That was the whole point. Nobody wishes ill will against the Byers kid, hell I hope he does go D1. But the first post from the mom was pretty much ripping Eli for apparent stat issues, and then ripping the ONW teammate for evidently getting 1 more tackle then her son.

If Randall Byers is as good as you say then within a few weeks we will all know, and you won't have to hit every post to let us know.

I was not trying to start anything to that extent, and it's only great for the league if Byers goes d1! And I hope he does as well. I haven't seen him play, maybe I was premature, but Mr. Smith is the best dlineman I have seen in recent memory. Good luck to all.

Chanda-Mae is clearly right on the money. I mean after the 21-14 double overtime brutal beat down the Ravens put on perennial Sunflower league (and national) powerhouse Shawnee Mission Northwest this week, the only reason Eli doesn't have them #1 in the power ratings MUST be the Hatin'! Byers will clearly beat the Hawks single handedly on Friday, ASSUMING the Cowboys don't sign him first to beat up on the Chiefs. Got to love the passion though....

Self promotion is the worst form of flattery. Don't blame other people for having a problem with it. At 6'5" and 305 lbs why hasn't Randall been on everyones radar? I hope his promoters let Randall make a name for himself on the field. Everyone wishes they had a couple kids his size on their roster. I will weigh his presence on my weekly picks. Mrs. Hopson-Byers, I admire your enthusiasm toward your son, especially since I know there are a lot of players out there that get little to no support for their parents. I would rather see more parents like you than the others.

Now, I would like to hand out some advise from some of my years spent around high school sports, esp football. Your son is in a great position to get noticed through other D1 athletes in the conference. The Ravens are "lucky" enough to have both SM West and OSHS on the schedule. Now SM West has 2 D1 athletes in Maloney and Chambers. There will most likely be D1 coaches watching that film, probably KU and BYU, the teams they have committed to... against Olathe South you have an uncommited D1 athlete and Lineman in Braden Smith, on the the top recruits in the nation. I'm guessing somewhere around 30 or the top D1 schools will see that game somehow- including Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas A&M, etc. You want your boy to get D1 offers. He better play big in those 2 games. The coaches watching Braden will all the sudden start asking "Who's this kid on the other team" conversation will get started.

Putting Randal on blast here does nothing, really. I'm not Nick Saban, Eli's not Urban Meyer. No one on the board is getting your son anywhere. If Randal plays at a high level when D1 coaches are guaranteed to be there- vs SM West and esp OSHS, that's when the offers start poring in... and NO D1 coaches really don't look to hard local stats. They know how stats can tell lies.

I'm just glad all of this discussion is happening in a public forum, where readers from any SFL school affiliation can chime in at any time on any subject.

It gives the players more exposure too. Five years ago the casual fan probably knew five or six players in the league that weren't on their own team. Now, I think fans in the league have a much broader knowledge of everything that's going on, and that builds the pageantry of the league.

I loved watching the HUDL videos and seeing the pictures of Randal Byers AND Mitch Kennedy working together, as a team, to bring those guys down! Sorry Chanda-Mae, your son isn't the only one out there!
