Wednesday Report: SM North week

SM West seems to be viewed by most local media sources as the second best team in the Sunflower League, behind Olathe East. Here is what the Kansas City Star had to say about the Vikings in their new rankings:

2. Shawnee Mission West (7-0, 1-0)
Last week: defeated Shawnee Mission Northwest, 17-10
This week: at Shawnee Mission North
The Vikings beat a very quality opponent last week to continue their season of rejuvenation. Senior Darron Harvey continues to the lead the league in rushing yardage. He is now up to 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns while averaging a robust 9.8 yards per carry. SM West has the league’s top scoring offense (more than 38 points per game) and also leads the league in total offense (400 yards per game).

My thoughts: Harvey's 9.8 yards per carry average is simply ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as the 187 yards rushing he is averaging per contest. In my time watching the Sunflower Conference I can't remember the last time a team had a go to back averaging that many yards per carry.

The secret to the success? Harvey stands 6-foot-2, weighs in at around 210 pounds, and recorded a 4.37 forty at a Scout.com combine this past summer. Combine that with stellar offensive line play and the fact that the coaching staff is soley playing Harvey on offense, and you have a malicious running attack.

Oh, and did I mention quarterback DJ Balazs? The junior signal caller has passed for 788 yards this season (112 yards per game average) and completely added another dimension to the offensive attack. By incorporating a successfull passing game into the mix the Vikings have soared to the top of the offensive charts in the conference, according to the Star, averaging more than 400 yars per game. Nasty.
