2009 6A Playoff Brackets

The KSHSAA released the playoff brackets this morning. SM West snuck in the #2 seed over Blue Valley Northwest, but will have to face a red-hot Blue Valley team in the first round of the playoffs. Olathe North is the top seed, and in what looks to be the best matchup, Lawrence Free State will battle Olathe East. I will have the game recaps posted sometime this weekend. In the meantime here is the bracket--2009 Kansas 6A State Playoffs.

Eli - How in the world did SMW manage the 2 seed with Free State 4? I could see some indecision re BVNW, as they play in the EKL... but Free State beat West head to head, at Shawnee Mission!

If KSHSAA had seeded it rationally, ON would be 1 and LFS would be 2 or 3, with SMW 4. I've been trying to decide who benefited from this gerrymandering, and I conclude it is SMW. The Vikings would have certainly lost again to LFS at their place on turf (but by more points this time) and would have been slaughtered by Olathe North where ever they play. But with this seeding they won't see either team until the state semifinal, assuming they can get past Blue Valley and the BVNW ONW winner.

I realize that's a bit of assuming - but it is still a lot easier path to the state semi's than through either of the Sunflower League top teams.

I think somebody pulled a string. Any insight?

I'm sorry I didn't see this comment earlier, but the reason SM West was seeded higher than Free State was because SM West's record was 8-1 heading into the playoffs, while Free State's was 7-2. the KSHSAA seeds teams in the playoffs based purely on record, not head to head results.
