JD Woods, Lawrence: The talented junior had a big night on Thursday, carrying the ball 33 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns. His performance helped Lawrence to a 19-7 victory over SM South, which pushed the Chesty Lions above the .500 mark for the first time all season. With the stellar performance, Woods now leads the league in rushing yards with 684 on 98 carries.
SM East's offensive line: There probably isn't a more skilled set of offensive lineman in the league than SM East's front five, whose starters consist of James Wooldridge, Jeff Heath, Will Kaiser, Stephen Gill, Will Amrein and Devin Price, and often times tight end Will Kost (if I screwed those names up someone please let me know). On Friday they paved the way for 249 rushing yards on 49 carries, and 313 yards of total offense. The output was actually well below their season average 342 rushing yards per game, but you get the idea. This unit is talented, relentless, and absolutely key to SM East's successes so far.
Week Five Coach of the Week
Linn Hibbs, SM Northwest: The SM Northwest parade will continue (for at least one more post). Hibbs' team ranks dead last in the league in total defense -- and has for most of the season -- giving up 436 yards per game. Despite this, they held Olathe East to seven points on Friday. It helped they had two interceptions deep in their own territory, but sometimes the luck is on your side. Especially on the night of the homecoming game. Hibbs' tenure with the Cougars hasn't been paved in gold, but victories like this make you remember he has 123 career victories to his name, including two Class 4A state titles.
