Wednesday Report: BV Northwest Week

Despite starting 0-7, BV Northwest ended their regular season on a very high note. In their second district game the Huskies scored a victory against SM South 23-16. The win wasn't flashy but it was enough to keep their playoff hopes alive. In their final game of the season the Huskies took out cross district rival Blue Valley North 34-0.

The game was by far and away BV Northwest's most impressive of the season. Quarterback Michael Peterson completed 14 of his 16 pass attempts, for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Six of those completions went to Casey Strohl who tallied 133 receiving yards and caught the two touchdown passes thrown by Peterson.

BV Northwest uses a variation of the spread offense that up until two weeks ago, hadn't worked well on the season. Their head coach, Mike Zegunis came to BV Northwest in 2005 from Olathe East, where he was an assistant coach under Jeff Meyers. Zegunis made one playoff appearence with the Huskies, in 2005, but they lost in the first round to Lawrence.

Porter, Week 10

Metro Sports' Brad Porter moved SM West up to a tie for the #1 ranking in his power poll, along with Blue Springs South. Here is what Porter had to say:

Do I think the Vikings are a No. 1 team based on the entire season? No. Their schedule does not put them in the elite class, yet. But the W’s beat the only team that mattered in their district – SMNW – and are primed for a deep run in the state playoffs. Good e-mail support this week.

Interesting to note that Blue Valley, a team SM West will potentially play in second round provided neither team gets upset in the first round, is listed with the #2 ranking. Olathe East rounds out at #3.
