The 33-year-old Delaney replaces former SM East head coach Chip Sherman, who accepted the head coaching job at Olathe Northwest two weeks ago.
With the late timing of Sherman's departure, it was vital that SM East quickly find a replacement before their summer weights and conditioning programs began.
Delaney compiled a 23-10 record during his tenure at Emporia, including a 9-2 record last fall.
Emporia's star player from the past few years, cornerback Jerel Morrow -- who was ranked by Rivals.com as a four-star recruit -- was listed as the top prospect in the state of Kansas for the class of 2013. Morrow signed with Oklahoma State and will join the Cowboys this summer.
Prior to his arrival in Emporia, Delaney served as the offensive coordinator at Hutchinson High School from 2006 to 2009, under legendary head coach Randy Dreiling. Hutchinson claimed a state title in each of Delaney's four years with the program.
Delaney accepted the head coaching job at Emporia in early 2010, and following Dreiling's tutelage, brought the vaunted flexbone offense with him. Assuming no major philosophy changes, Delaney and SM East will debut the offense this fall -- which will make them the first team in the Sunflower League to run the flexbone.

A+ hire! Great coach who has had success everywhere. SME will be my surprise team going into next year with there new flexbone offense.
I will have to rethink my Top 10 but
11 and 12 will more than likely be SMN and SMNW.
Completely agree. Sunflower League shaping up to be very, very interesting.
A great hire for the smeasters but going from Air Sherman to the flexbone will be a bit of a culture shock I think. Also the talent cupboard may be rather bare on Mission Rd. I don't look for them to challenge for next season but it should pay off for them down the road.
