News and Notes

Tomorrow's 6A state championship between Lawrence Free State (9-3) and Junction City (12-0) will be a first of many sorts:

**Most notably, there will be a 6A state champion not named Hutchinson. The Salthawks from Hutch had won the previous four 6A state titles before dropping to class 5A this year.

**Lawrence Free State is appearing in its first ever state championship game. The school which played its first season in 1997, won its first playoff game in 2006. That same season the Firebirds lost in the Sub-State round vs. SM West, keeping them from the title game.

**This is the first year since 1995 that the city of Lawrence has a team in the 6A championship game. The city was accustomed to championships during the 80's and 90's, when Lawrence High School won 10 6A championships from 1979 to 1995. In 1997 the city opened its second high school, Lawrence Free State, and since then no Lawrence high school has made the title game.
