All State/All Metro Teams

The past few weeks the majority of the Kansas All-State teams have been selected, likewise with the KC Star All-Metro squad. State wise, SM West had nice showings with Darron Harvey and Justin Scott placing on both the Topeka Capitol-Journal and Wichita Eagle All-6A teams.

Both players were more than deserving of the All-State honors. Scott was a three year starter for the Vikings, and was instrumental all three years on offense, defense, and special teams. Harvey meanwhile had a breakout senior year rushing for 1,600 yards.

My beef comes with the KC Star. In my opinion, SM West was snubbed on the Star's first team All-Metro squad. Given their accolades, there is no way that both Darron Harvey and Justin Scott should have been left off of the list. One of those players should have been on the team. Of course, if you have followed the All-Metro of late, SM West getting snubbed comes as no surprise.

Since 2004, the Star has only placed two SM West players on the first team - Blake Lawrence and Jared Witter were both on the 2006 team. Essentially nine SM West players who were All-State 6A have been snubbed (DJ Barnett and Andrew Patch in 2004, Clint Benge and Kyle Crow in 2005, David Leonard in 2006, Tony Ritzman and RJ Faiva in 2007, and Justin Scott and Darron Harvey in 2008).

Am I claiming that all of those players should have been on the Star's All-Metro team? No, but a little recognition would be nice. Olathe North, a team that lost in the sectional round of the playoffs this year had three players on the first team. In 2006 when SM West made it to the state championship game, only two players appeared on the squad.

My Comments:

**Interesting to note that Darron Harvey was placed on the two All-State teams as a defensive back, despite the fact that Harvey only played offense this season. I figure it was a nice gesture by both papers to get him on their lists after the great season he had.
